Introduction to Dressmaking

This dressmaking workshop is an ideal follow-on from our beginner machine sewing course, or for anyone with basic sewing machine skills who wants to start making their own clothes. Learn how to read and understand a commercial pattern along with essential techniques for dressmaking whilst making a cosy pair of pyjama bottoms. Included in the price is a Simplicity pattern with various his/hers nightwear designs which you can take away and re-use. You will learn how to understand and adapt patterns to get a perfect fit. Plus, get to grips with waistbands, hemming, buttonholes, joining straight and curved seams, and pattern matching to achieve a professional finish. This sewing class is designed for students with basic sewing machine experience and taught on your machine but if you do not have a machine the tutor has entry level Janome machines available to use for free. Workshop price includes Simplicity pattern, hire of machine (if needed), sewing kits, thread and elastic. You will need to bring 3 metres of your own fabric, the tutor recommends a standard weight cotton for the pyjama bottoms or a brushed cotton also works nicely. Please don't bring anything stretchy. If bringing your own machine please make sure it is in good working order before the workshop. If you need it servicing you can use Direct Sewing machines in Brislington or Mark at Cathedral Sewing Machines. You will also need to bring the buttonhole foot that came with your machine. Taught by experienced teacher Lauren Holloway, there is a max of 6 students per class, and each student has an individual workstation.
