- North Street 56
During this 6-week Wednesday evening course you will learn the basic techniques of traditional upholstery by working on your own furniture. There is also an option to make a footstool from scratch using traditional techniques. The course is taught by an established professional in an extension of her vibrant shop. Skills covered will include ripping-out, webbing, springing if applicable, making a stitched edge, styles of stuffing, fitting top fabric and trimmings. Those with some upholstery experience may advance their techniques with upholstered arms, box cushions and modern techniques. The sessions are two and a half hours, to allow you to get into a project of your choice and create a finished piece of furniture you can be proud of. A maximum of 6 participants on each course allows everyone to get personal attention. The course fee includes use of specialist upholstery tools and sundries such as thread, staples, tacks, consumables and stuffing materials for a seat pad or small project. There is a small cost for upholstery materials used for subsequent projects charged to students at a discounted rate. Students can provide their own fabric but will also be entitled to a 10% discount on all brand fabrics sold in the shop while they are studying with us. Further information about good pieces for beginners and where to source them will be included in a course information document sent to you before the start date. If you are unsure about whether a piece is suitable please contact us with a picture. If you would like the footstool option there will be an additional £20 charge for the frame and stuffings. You will also have a choice of legs (around £20 for a set of 4). We will contact you about options before the start of the course. Please note the classes start on Wednesday 7th September and run until 12th October.
