Service Description

Join basketmaker Mary Lewis for this beginner weaving course, which will introduce you to the ancient craft of basket making. This is the second day of two separate workshops over the weekend which are designed to be either booked separately, or as a full weekend where you will learn two different styles of making willow baskets. Mary's supportive, relaxed teaching style will guide you through the various stages of each basket. You will gain an understanding of how the willow behaves as you weave and, after the final trimming up, you will have a useful basket you will be proud to take home. You will learn about the simple tools that are used in basketry and some basic weaving patterns that can be applied to a wide range of baskets in the future. Day one: Berry basket Using Somerset willow, you will make your own berry basket including making a round base, staking up, weaving the sides, creating a simple border and adding a handle. This basket is the perfect size for berry foraging, easter egg hunting or storing odds and ends. This basket is made using the 'stake and strand' technique which is traditional to the UK and still made by most basketmakers. This is one of the earliest forms of basket making, where the shape and size of the basket is dependent on the bent willow ribs that are added first. These baskets are lovely for displaying fruit or for collecting eggs. All tools and materials will be provided. Please wear closed toe shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting a bit grubby.
